Circumsicion ConcernMy son was circumsized on Wednesday (he was 5 days old). We were told to change the gauze pad at every diaper change with liberal amounts of ointment. From the moment we first saw the results of the curcumcision we thought something was wrong because it just didn't look right. However we weren't sure as neither my husband or myself had ever seen a just-circumcized penis before. Luckily, our follow up appointment was on Friday, only two days away. When the doctor saw my son's penis he agreed that it didn't look right. He said it had "turtled". In other words the head had been sucked back inside, like a turtle pulls its head back inside its shell. So what we are seeing is a little shaft with a red swollen area at the top. In the middle of the red swollen area you can slightly see the very tip of the penis head.
In the two days following the circumcision it had started to heal so the doctor had to break a little of the skin and pop the penis head back out, obviously causing pain and bleeding. We were instructed to pop the penis head back out every 5-6 hours so that it didn't begin to heal back inside this swollen area again. Today is now Sunday and it doesn't appear to be getting any better. Everytime we pop the penis head back out it seems to cause our son a lot of pain as he screams bloody murder. Then before we can even get a new diaper on, the head is sucked back in. Does anyone know what this is called and how long we will have to keep doing this before it heals and becomes normal? It's killing me having to cause my son what appears to be so much pain every other time I change his diaper and it is causing him to hate having his diaper changed, even when we don't touch his penis. Is it really necessary to keep poping the head back out? I read that when dealing with things like adhesions it's best to just leave it alone and it will eventually do what it is supposed to do naturally (I'm not saying my son's problem is adhesions because I have no idea what he has). Any help or advice or similar stories with results would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, Amanda
