Just diagnosed w/ a varicocele- need adviceI'm 28 & recently felt a lot of pain in my left testicle all of a sudden. A couple weeks before I noticed that my left one was a little bigger but didnt think anything of it. Anyway, when I felt the pain, I went to the E.R. They did a ultrasound & found out that I have a varicocele in my left testicle. I've been in pain since then, so its been about 4 days. Went to my primary doc for a referral & its taking forever to get. I'm on vicodin now for the pain which helps. BUT I want to know- In the mean while, is this gonna affect other parts of the body negatively? I mean could it cause damage to kidneys? prostate? or any other parts of the urinary system? I'm thinking since the pain is pretty bad- only a surgery can help me. Those that undergone this surgery, can you get in touch & tell me what to expect? (regarding pain, outcome, etc) It would be much appreciated.
Re: Just diagnosed w/ a varicocele- need adviceI had a similar situation with a lot of pain in addition to low testosterone and testicular atrophy, so I felt horrible. I had surgery almost eight weeks ago and I now have no pain. Most of the pain went away within the first couple of weeks. I still had a little pain for the third through the sixth week but it lessened every day. After around the sixth week, I haven't had any pain.
The surgery wasn't bad at all other than the fact that I was knocked out laying on a table naked but at that point I didn't really care. After the surgery, I just had to move really slow at first, take small steps and not do much. After three weeks I was back to playing sports and working in the yard although if I did too much I would be a little sore. I was the one that put the post under Published Stories on Sept. 10, 2008 (RTD) if you haven't read it. For my situation the surgery worked great and I would recommend it. The short recovery time was nothing compared to how bad I felt before the surgery. I hope you are able to figure out what works best for you and get something done to stop the pain. I was in pain for about five months before I had the surgery and wish I would have had it done much earlier.
Re: Just diagnosed w/ a varicocele- need adviceFirst off thx for the reply! Yes, I did read your published story. I'm just trying to get into a urolologist ASAP to do something about this. I'll go through the surgery if it'll get rid of this pain.
Re: Just diagnosed w/ a varicocele- need adviceI had it tested before the surgery and mine was good but I can't remember the count. I did not have it tested after the surgery, since my pre-surgery test was good. I had the surgery do to pain and other complications.
I have been lucky and have not had a problem with fertility. I am fortunate to have an eight year old boy and a five year old girl. I hope everything works out for you. Good luck.
Re: Just diagnosed w/ a varicocele- need advicePenis stayed the same. My testicles both increased after the surgery especially the left one since my left one had shrunk do to the varicocele.
The only minor side effect I had after the surgery was that everything left of the incision was numb. There are nerves that start somewhere around your navel that go down into your lower abdomen to your leg and in my surgery they had to be cut. It gradually has gone away and after eight weeks it is just slightly numb. I can barely tell now. That meant the lower left side of my penis, the left side of my scrotum and down into my inner thigh was numb for a while.
