Post-Varicocele Operation Questions

Post a new topicby rabazrubuz on Wed Dec 16, 2009 9:34 am

I had a Varicocele surgery done in Sweden about 1 month ago (16th Nov).

I left Sweden to go to Switzerland about 2 weeks after the operation and will be staying here a couple of months and therefore am unable to go to a check-up at my urologist at this time, but since I didn’t get a lot of information about the post-operation “experience” I feel quite worried.

I noticed the Varicocele grow for about 5 years before I went to the doctor. I never really had a problem with it except for the enlargement being in the way sometimes, and also, sometimes id feel a “heaviness”. But other than that I wasn’t that bothered. But since it was very big and visible, the doctor decided on operation.

I had self-desolving stitches so i didn’t have to go back to take them out, but about a week after the operation i accidently ripped one a little while pulling my pants up, it started bleeding a little bit. Since then both sides of the incision have been bleeding. It’s not bleeding a lot, but enough to stain though the dressing.

Because of this, my doctor told me to wait 2 more weeks to cut the loops sticking out of the incision and i cut them yesterday.
Is the bleeding quite common with desolving stiches? Should I be worried?

My second questions is about the recovery process.

I’ve read on a couple of forumposts that its quite normal to feel sore and swollen after the operation, about how long does this take to go away?

As I said its now 1 month after the operation and my testicle is feeling very sore, the bloodvessels reaching down to the left testicle (which was my original problem) are still quite swollen and sore.
Also, I’ve experienced a "stiffness" in my penis/shaft, it feels like one of the bloodvessels or nerves reaching out on the top of the shaft has just gone really stiff. Looking at this picture I would say it’s the “Dorsal Veins”, “Dorsal Artery” or the “dorsal Nerves” ( http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f6/Gray1155.png ).

When my penis is erect it feels like a tense string under my skin, running all the way from my body to the foreskin on the top of the shaft. Also I can see and feel sore and swollen blood vessels on the inside of the foreskin just under the glans.

My questions are:
1. Is the bleeding of the incision common? Should i be worried?
2. Are the sore, swollen, tense, stiff feelings I’m experiencing common this far after the operation? When can I expect them to go away?
3. What symptoms should I be worried about and be looking out for?
4. Is it unwise to have sex this time after the operation? How long would you recommend waiting?

Thank you!
