Varicocele caused my left testicals to be smaller

Post a new topicby jayded on Sat Jun 21, 2008 12:13 pm

Dear all, I'm 28 and been married for 3 yrs. Have been trying to have a child since last yr. I went for a check up recently and found out that i had significat varicocele on my left testicals. According to the doctor i probably would have had it since young as it has affected the growth on the left testical. The right one is significantly bigger.

The sperm test showed i has 12 million volume. Motility was not good and the doctors said i had OAT syndrome. This is the second test that i did after 3 months. The first test showed i had 13 million in volume. But the first doctor i saw was a real jerk and never explained things to me properly.

The one i'm seeing now is the head of Urologist for the biggest hospital in my country. He said that going for an op would not guarentee an improvement. he did ask me to consider IUI. But said the choice is up to me.

i have been reading so much about this varicocele and lots of different opinions appears.

should i go ahead for the op? My wife's gynea told me to go for it. My urologist said the operation method would be one where he does the incersion and tie up the vains. Is it painful?

Pls share your experience ppl.....thank you.

Varicoceles can definatly affect the size of the testicle. Especially if it is a grade 3 / large size. Having the surgery is a gurantee of success, but it does have possbilities. There are several different approaches to the surgery. From what I have read and the procedure I went for was the micro-surgical procecedure. Make sure you go to an infertility urologist in your area to have it done. Most general urologist will not perform it. The failure rate on it is quite low, and the changes / odds are in your favor.

Dont take my word for it, definatly do you homework on the different approaches. A website that will be helpful. http://www.maleinfertility.org/new-varicocele.html It shows the procedure and explains about the other options.

Basically from the stats i've read the micro-surgical way about 75% see a difference in the semen analysis and good pregenancy rates. Pretty good odds.

The downsize to surgery is the healing process you will be out for about 3 days resting, and be uncomfortable for about 2 weeks. After I felt great, I had the ache but had it for so long I didnt know. After it felt fantastic. And the size in my case came back.

Thanks for the reply. It is a great website. I hope to get more feedback from those who have done the operation and the different methods of op....
